some crate-digging compilations are often the result of someone hand-picking their choice favourites from another country’s musical history, perhaps unaware or uninvolved with its cultural lineage in the process. on this release - a treasure trove of synth jams, pop, samba boogie, balearic and electro from 1980 & ‘90s brazil - the tracks are picked by millos kaiser, one half of the brazilian duo selvagem, who are at the helm of throwing some of the country’s best dance parties. it’s a rare compilation that offers brazilian music actually picked by a brazilian.

released in solidarity with tigas anti-tech house crusade, a silent campaign fought everyday on the streets of your hometown, blaze finds russian crypto-whiz dimitri veimar still dancing with the rawer-than-the-rawest-dog electro thats brought him to the dizzying heights of the mid-tier crags of mt. turbo mountain. throwing his weight behind what some in the media are probably already calling tigas war was absolutely necessary following the events of a recent gig in moscow. veimar opened the night by playing no fewer than three tiga tracks, which anyone whos read tigas taboos can tell you is definitely a tiga taboo. deeply immersed in the practice of pouring his own mineral water, tiga ignored the hootin and hollerin of the vips crowding the dj booth (including dennis miller and diego maradona), and proceeded to play a set entirely comprised of recordings of every embarrassing thing veimar had ever said in his life. four hours later, an emotionally-shot veimar collapsed into tigas arms, with the magnanimous label boss whispering, i forgive you, dimitri into his ear. the release also features a broken techno remix from mysterious european producer florian kupfer, who made us sign a non-disclosure-agreement dictating that we can only describe him as mysterious, enigmatic, and/or european, so well have to let the music do the talking.

fans of the berlin based nils frahm are by now familiar with his beguiling live shows where more often than not fellow touring artists are encouraged to join frahm on stage – the likes of rachel grimes, rob lowe of balmorhea as well as label colleagues peter broderick and Ólafur arnalds have all obliged with fascinating results. it will come as no surprise then that nils frahm, an accomplished composer and producer who signed to erased tapes in 2009, has extended his collaborative live musings to encompass the recording studio, working for the first time with noted cellist and fellow berliner anne müller to produce 7fingers.
with their first collective release frahm and müller have built a world where modern classical and electronica collide creating an intoxicating and delicious collection of songs. primarily a pianist nils frahm provides evidence with 7fingers that he can effortlessly turn electric throwing in loops, samples and glitches to accompany and showcase müller on cello. anne müller, a renowned musician noted for her work with the wolf-ferrari-ensemble, phillip boa and recent tours with agnes obel, proves an amp musical partner for frahm.

dirty funk house from colombia! with heavy remixes by seb wildblood (church), retrogott (ava, money sex) & dj qualle and pontchartrain. felipe gordon is new to the scene, but entering the house world now via toy tonics in a heavy way. just watch that remix package: felipe gordon has some massive fans already. he knows a few dudes and he has some cool releases coming on church, s3a records and intimate friends. in fact felipe is throwing some of the biggest underground house parties in colombia along with his nómada records crew from bogotá. and he is making tracks, too. dirty bangers. with a certain unique vibe. he used to play in bands before switching to samplers and getting addicted to old disco and house vinyl. you can hear that: his moody, raw tunes use samples of rare records. but selected carefully, adding his own juno 60 or moog synth chords (like on tell me something true). often using minor keys and lot of little noises and short spoken words by himself. never clean, always musically special. felipe gordon might be new to the international dance scene, but for sure you gonna hear that name more frequently over the next years.

kingswood drive and accidental return were an early teaser of this new set. displaying their signature analogue sounds and arpeggios, alongside broken beats and soul, you wouldn t be alone in hearing the influences of dam funk, herbie hancock or bugz in the attic coming through on these two. elsewhere more jittery, playful rhythms underpin croydon rooftop café culture. as well as in the calming and ethereal prints on the heath, a subtle tribute to mutual hero prince, who passed away on the unusually prolific day this and two other, currently unreleased, tracks were written and recorded. throughout the ep the duo nod at their london home from the -heath- to kingswood drive and more obviously croydon itself. the sound of south london is threaded throughout this record with pride. even down to the mechanical sunset sound of ep finale thorns, capturing some of the essence of the studio view over london from their high point on the hill in thornton heath. the first ep from albert s favourites co-founders and synth-production duo modified man focused on throwing out heavy editing, recording music with as few processes as possible and grabbing performances as single takes. blending warped cassette recordings that touched upon early jazz-funk/brit-funk influences with the energy of broken beat and experimental electronica, won them support from patrick forge, osunlade, thris tian, yam who? and titeknots to name a few. since that release they premiered new track thorns live on boiler room, going on to deliver a full, three-hour live performance and dj set for the infamous global community. they also provided remixes for dele sosimi, amp fiddler, makadem & behr and hector plimmer, meanwhile, busily preparing a series of four, six-track vinyl eps which will be released over the next 18 months.

initially described as superlative 25th century electronic exotica by cowboy rhythmbox themselves, the fourth ep from phantasys in-house trouble and hitmakers received support from top jocks including dixon, jackmaster and marcel dettmann. now, i’s dynamic lead track is rejigged, expanded upon and shot through with analogue energy by two equally inventive producer pairings. fellow outsiders on the inside of the house of house, israels finest red axes take the first turn, coaxing the cosmos out of the original and allowing the bewildering vocal samples to lead the way through waves of more than pleasurable cosmic tension. soon, with the timing just right, feet to pedals and strobe to hand, the pair unleash a series of distorted guitar licks that blow dust off the stacks, even throwing in a sharp blast of their trademark surrealist vocals for extra freaky fx. on the flip, marvin and guy zone out and hone in on the originals ebm-indebted elements to contribute a trippy, wave-riding electro rework that oscillates irresistibly. teasing listeners with a playful, almost naive synth line, the mood shimmers instead with uncompromising acid, as the pair ultimately push the modulars into strange and hypnotic territories to get lost in.

with this in mind, the crew present their debut release forth vol. 1 a six-track compilation of some of toronto’s finest talent. calling upon friends and colleagues who represent the diverse underground electronic scene, the compilation features club focused material from ciel (peach discs, diswoman), gingy (clone/royal oak, it’s not u it’s me), r (opal tapes, jericho one), kontravoid (cititrax, fliesch), hadi (forth), and joel eel (forth, x-img).

legs 11 was formed when sigmund floyd, of palace of pleasure fame, joined forces with torstein dyrnes from the now defunct playstation duo tøyen, and mysterious bedroom musician nils tveten. during a karaoke-fuelled haze in the seedy parts of oslo, they discovered a shared love of synth pop, post-punk, new wave and house music. drawing on these influences, the band has created a diverse musical universe, ranging from dark repetitive guitar driven tracks, via infectious pop gems, to deep yet melodic dancefloor-orientated grooves. in 2017 they were joined by multi-instrumentalist audun severin eftevåg, who also brought a new instrument into the band: the saxophone! the “another wave” album is hand-picked tracks from their latest works, focusing on a more dancier approach. the house and nu-dance influences of today is mixed with heavy influences from 90’s uk indie-dance acts like the shamen and the madchester scene, and hints of new wave from the 80’s.

four tracks of ny-flavoured boogie and house goodness - quality is the key word from copenhagen based music for dreams and here is another home run. willie graff splits his year between dj residencies in new york and ibiza. in this new outing with studio partner darren eboli, the influence is, as the title suggests, clearly ny-based. over only four tracks, the pair manage to craft a stunningly comprehensive exploration of the essential elements of dance music. opening track -love flight- staggers into a lush string-driven groove that recalls the glory of metro area meets wally badarou vibes. minimal yet playful, it lounges somewhere in the depths of the house tradition, calling on familiar sounds while throwing in odd details along the way (harmonicas?). it takes both skill, devotion and a sense of humor to pull this track off, making for a strong opening. -moon tan- lingers on a metallic hook that drags you into a plethora of percussion followed by a rubbery soft baseline. dubby key work would suggest this was a new wave band jamming at compass point, while the icy chill of the xylophone transports you into 80s italo territory. -second sun- pulls out the bag of boogie tricks, relying on a firm but humble baseline and smattering drum machine claps. nile rodgers-style guitar licks guide us onwards into a well-orchestrated jam that builds up and breaks down with perfect timing while dreamy chords reach for the sky. -first light- keeps the groove tight while dipping over towards more balearic temperatures. steeped in a watery atmosphere and gentle organic percussion, it focuses in on a trance-inducing arpeggio that lulls you in to the swaying badarou-style synth swirls that intercept it.

we had a little pause on our release schedule, but without further delay we present with pleasure the next bomb by our good friend, dj spider! thema 46 was hatched from someone so deeply ingrained in the underground that he barely needs an introduction. from his ra label of the month featured imprint plan b recordings, to his thoroughly played productions on labels such as rekids, killekill and the trilogy tapes, dj spider has been a mainstay on the murkiest, most disorderly dance floors for years. his sound is characterized by disjointed elements lurching around in a off-kilter yet magnetic way that forces you to move in ways you didn t know you could. from the hell scorched, pitch bent echoes of the final revolution to the lo-fi groove antics of distress signal, dj spider proves once again that no one can do it as perfectly weird as he can. text by: nathan levenson

producer, dj and visual artist, dreams, has become a standout voice in the los angeles electronic landscape. the following he’s amassed locally is due, in part, to his own imprint, private selection, who’s focus so far has been split between releasing music and throwing events. an ethos that runs through both the his music and parties is indebted in part to house and techno, but also industrial, resulting in a mutated take on dance life forms that is becoming increasingly recognizable in his own records and dj sets. dreams’ first 12’, ‘twisted karma’, came out in 2015 via private selection. most recently, he released a record which saw light through greek imprint nous disques, and now, apron records.
